Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department

Perth Workplace

IA was engaged to deliver the new Perth workplace for the Commonwealth Attorney General’s Department (AGD), creating a contemporary and considered environment that responds to the Department’s operational needs while establishing a distinct sense of place.

Across approximately 752 m², the workplace introduced non-allocated offices and workpoints, supported by a range of meeting, collaboration and focused work settings. The planning provides staff with choice in how and where they work while maintaining an intuitive layout and clear connections between individual and shared spaces.

Working closely with the client and broader consultant team, IA developed the workplace from briefing through design, documentation and delivery, balancing functional and operational requirements with a strong focus on the overall workplace experience.

Design Approach

The design was guided by five key principles: design for calm, soften the edges, reflect local identity, connect with purpose and prioritise privacy. These principles informed the planning, materiality and detailing of the workplace, creating an environment that feels professional and refined while remaining warm and welcoming.

A restrained and natural material palette draws on the colours and textures of the Western Australian landscape. Warm timber, layered neutrals, muted greens and tactile finishes establish a sense of calm, with deeper tones providing contrast and definition throughout the workplace. Curved forms within furniture and joinery soften the more structured elements of the environment and create a more inviting workplace experience.

The connection to place is deliberately subtle, using materiality, colour and texture rather than literal references to create a workplace that feels distinctly Western Australian.

The planning balances opportunities for connection with the need for quiet and privacy. Collaboration and shared settings are purposefully integrated throughout the floorplate, while focused work areas and more private settings provide appropriate separation and discretion. Natural light and clear circulation further support an environment that feels calm, intuitive and easy to navigate.

Project Delivery

IA worked closely with AGD and the wider consultant team to coordinate workplace planning, services, technology and operational requirements throughout the project.

Early coordination and detailed documentation were key to resolving project interfaces while maintaining the overall design intent. IA remained closely involved through delivery, ensuring the original design principles, materiality and functional requirements translated consistently into the completed workplace.

Project Outcome

The completed Perth workplace provides AGD with a calm, contemporary and distinctly Western Australian working environment. Non-allocated offices and workpoints are complemented by a considered mix of collaboration, meeting, focused and private settings, providing greater choice while making efficient use of the floorplate.

The project established a strong workplace benchmark for AGD and provided IA with an indepth understanding of the Department’s workplace and operational requirements, informing our continued work with AGD across other Australian locations.
